This development is not entirely new. Google first announced that Gemini Nano would be integrated into the Chrome desktop client at I/O 2024. By 2025, with Chrome v140, Google expanded support for Gemini Nano to a wider range of devices to support additional client-side AI functionalities. Now, Chrome's 4GB AI model has been running on millions of PCs since 2024, likely without the knowledge of the majority of users. Furthermore, Google failed to clarify that its 'AI Mode' in the search bar is not part of Gemini Nano, instead relying on cloud computing. This lack of transparency is confusing at best and deceptive at worst. Opt-Out Is Google's New Permission Slip
Alexander Hanff, also known as That Privacy Guy, first reported that Chrome was installing a 4GB AI model on users' storage without warning. Hanff, a privacy researcher and lawyer, also previously identified similar behavior by Anthropic, where files were installed in Chromium-based browsers without alerting users. In both cases, removing these files proved harder than installing them. With Gemini Nano, users were left guessing how to delete it, and some reported that the model would be reinstalled after removal. Google later told CNET that an option to toggle the AI model on or off has existed since February, and after searching Google support documentation, there is indeed information about managing on-device AI models in Chrome, including how to turn AI off.
Google apparently determines which users receive the download based on specific hardware requirements, though these requirements are not publicly listed. Observations show that some desktops have the weights.bin file installed, while others—such as a MacBook Air running the same Chrome version—do not. This lack of transparency is something Google should have addressed upfront. Moreover, Google treats this as the new default in Chrome, forcing users to opt out by digging through Chrome settings or manually removing files from their computers rather than allowing them to opt in. Regardless of whether you want the AI model, this approach is inexcusable. According to Hanff, who is also a lawyer, Google's actions could face legal consequences in Europe, where privacy laws are far more comprehensive and strict.

For those who trust Google—even relatively—the aggressive push of AI may seem a non-issue. However, for those who distrust Google's data scraping from Gmail or its general privacy practices, the company's behavior with AI is deeply concerning.
I find that Gemini Nano is less the problem than the precedent Google has established over the last several years: leveraging its dominant market share and captive user base to deliver dubious features without warning or consent, treating them as opt-out by default, and then asking for forgiveness afterward—if at all.
