Bluesky Has a New App, and It’s All About AI

Bluesky has recently announced a new app called Attie, which focuses on integrating artificial intelligence into the social media experience. This development comes after Jay Graber stepped down as CEO to assume the role of chief innovation officer at Bluesky. Despite the unusual nature of the title, it underscores Graber's commitment to innovation in the tech industry.

Attie is designed to empower users by allowing them to customize their social media interactions with the assistance of AI technology, specifically Anthropic's Claude. According to the new Bluesky CEO, Toni Schneider, the app represents a significant step forward for the platform, marking it as the first standalone product developed by Graber's team.

Schneider emphasized that while Attie is fundamentally an AI product, it is distinctly focused on enhancing the user experience. This focus may cause some friction among Bluesky users, particularly those who have been critical of AI discussions on the platform. Bluesky originally gained traction as an alternative to Twitter, particularly during the so-called Great Twitter Evacuation of 2023, when users sought a space free from Elon Musk's influence.

Bluesky’s founder, Jack Dorsey, envisioned the platform as one that prioritizes user customization and flexibility. Graber, who began her career at a blockchain logistics company, has consistently highlighted customizability as Bluesky’s guiding principle. In a conversation in 2024, she articulated her vision for social media as a platform that prioritizes user control and personalization.

The announcement of Attie came during Bluesky's 2026 Atmosphere conference, aimed at developers and enthusiasts engaged with the platform's open protocol, known as atpro. The app allows users to enter prompts that function similarly to chatbot commands. It processes these inputs to curate content that aligns with the user’s interests across Bluesky and other compatible networks.

Reportedly, attendees at the Atmosphere conference were given the opportunity to beta test Attie, which is still under development. The overarching goal of the app is to enable users to create a personalized social media experience, effectively allowing them to "vibe-code" their own application. This level of customization reflects Bluesky's original intent to provide a dynamic social media environment tailored to individual preferences.

As the tech landscape evolves, Bluesky's introduction of Attie highlights a growing trend towards personalization in social media platforms. By harnessing the power of AI, Bluesky aims to differentiate itself further in a crowded market, catering to users who desire a more tailored and engaging online experience.

Moving forward, it remains to be seen how Bluesky's user base will respond to this new offering. The success of Attie will likely hinge on its ability to resonate with users who have historically been skeptical of AI applications, yet are drawn to the platform for its promise of customization and user-centric features.
