WordPress.com is taking a significant step into the future of web publishing by integrating AI agents into its platform. This innovative move allows AI to draft, edit, and publish content, fundamentally changing how users can manage their websites. Announced on Friday, this capability enables AI agents to handle various tasks including managing comments, updating metadata, and organizing content through tags and categories.
Website owners can interact with these AI agents via a user-friendly interface where they can issue natural language commands to instruct the AI on desired actions. This development suggests that websites could be predominantly created and maintained by AI, drastically lowering the barriers for individuals and businesses looking to establish an online presence.
As a key player in the web hosting space, WordPress powers over 43% of all websites globally. While the hosted WordPress.com platform accounts for a smaller portion of this total, it still boasts impressive metrics, including 20 billion page views and 409 million unique visitors monthly.
The introduction of AI capabilities follows last fall's rollout of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support on WordPress.com, allowing applications to provide contextual information to large language models. This integration enables AI assistants to connect seamlessly with the platform, giving users insights into their site's content, settings, and analytics through preferred AI applications such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code.
With these new features, AI agents on WordPress.com can now create posts, landing pages, and even About pages, alongside making structural changes to a website. They can also approve, reply to, and manage comments, as well as rename and restructure categories and tags across the site. Additionally, AI agents can enhance a site's SEO by fixing alt text, captions, and titles, with all changes being tracked in the site's Activity Log.
Users can create drafts for their AI agents, specifying tags and categories as well as meta descriptions. Alternatively, they can allow the AI agent to autonomously generate content by simply describing the desired output. While all changes require user approval, and AI-generated posts are saved as drafts initially, these features significantly expedite website creation and content management.
The AI agent is also capable of analyzing the site's theme and design, ensuring that any content it generates adheres to the established aesthetic, including colors, fonts, spacing, and layout patterns. To activate these features, users need to visit wordpress.com/mcp, where they can toggle on the functionalities they wish to enable. They can then connect their preferred AI client, such as Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT, to start leveraging these capabilities.
Although the rise of AI-generated content raises questions about the future of web content authenticity, it is noted that AI-authored posts can offer valuable insights into the writing and engagement styles of AI models. This integration aligns with broader trends in social media, as seen with Meta's acquisition of Moltbook, a platform that allowed AI agents to interact autonomously. Similarly, Anthropic has tested AI-written blogs under human oversight.
