Beyond Siri: Here are the practical AI features coming to your iPhone in iOS 27

At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026, the company unveiled its most ambitious software update yet: iOS 27. While the AI-powered overhaul of Siri dominated headlines, Apple's broader strategy is far more subtle, embedding artificial intelligence into the apps and services that millions of users already rely on every day. Rather than forcing consumers to adopt a new chatbot-like interface, the company is weaving intelligence into the fabric of the operating system, making the iPhone itself feel smarter and more proactive.

The result is a set of features that solve real-world problems with minimal friction. Whether it's splitting a restaurant bill, securing compromised passwords, or organizing your browser tabs, iOS 27 leverages on-device Apple Intelligence to automate tasks that previously required manual effort. These capabilities are live in the current developer beta, set to arrive in the public beta within weeks, and will ship to all users later this fall.

Bill Splitting with Apple Cash

One of the most practical additions is the ability to split a restaurant bill using Apple Cash. The feature uses Apple Intelligence to analyze a photo of the receipt, extracting item names, quantities, tip, and total. Users can select the items they ordered and then send a request to a group chat for others to do the same. Others can select their items and even specify half portions. Payment is completed with a double-click, just like any other Apple Cash transaction. Crucially, the system automatically calculates each person's share of tax and tip, removing the awkward math from group dining. The feature appears only when needed, integrated seamlessly into Messages and Wallet.

Automated Password Updates

Apple's Passwords app, already a solid competitor to third-party managers like 1Password, gets a major AI-driven upgrade. The new feature agentically identifies weak or compromised passwords—including those exposed in data breaches—and then automatically navigates to the relevant websites, signs in, and upgrades the password to a stronger, more secure version. This eliminates the tedious manual process of changing dozens of passwords after a breach. All operations run securely on the device, ensuring sensitive credentials are never exposed to external servers.

One-Tap Suggestions in Messages

The Messages app introduces intelligent context-aware suggestions that appear as one-tap buttons above the keyboard. For example, if a friend asks you to bring something to a gathering, the AI will offer to add that item to your Reminders. If someone requests photos from an event, Apple Intelligence suggests the most relevant pictures based on keywords, locations, and people from your library. If you're planning a dinner date, it can prompt you to create a Calendar event. These suggestions feel natural and unobtrusive, enhancing the conversation rather than interrupting it.

Call Context for Customer Service

Phone calls with customer service are often stressful because you need to recall confirmations, reservation numbers, or account details. iOS 27's Call Context feature solves this by displaying relevant information directly on the call screen. For instance, if you're calling an airline about a flight, your confirmation code appears automatically. The AI pulls this data from your email in the Mail app, processing everything on-device for privacy. No need to speak to an assistant or navigate menus—the essential details just surface when you need them.

Natural Language Calendar Events

Adding events to the Calendar app becomes as simple as typing a sentence. Users can describe an event in natural language, such as "Lunch with Sarah next Tuesday at 1 PM at the Italian place." Apple Intelligence extracts the date, time, contacts, and location to create a properly formatted event. This feature, long available in third-party apps like Fantastical, now comes built-in, reducing friction for users who prefer Apple's native tools.

Vibe-Coding Shortcuts

The Shortcuts app, a powerful tool for creating automations, has historically been too complex for casual users. iOS 27 changes that by allowing you to describe what you want in plain language. For example, you could say: "Set my alarm based on my first calendar event tomorrow" or "Turn on the porch lights when my DoorDash order arrives." The AI translates the description into a working automation, lowering the barrier for non-technical users. It can also handle more advanced tasks like opening a specific set of apps when connecting a keyboard, or texting your partner your ETA when leaving work.

Reduced Notifications in Home App

Smart home users often face notification overload—each device action can trigger an alert. With Apple Intelligence, the Home app can group related actions into a single notification. For instance, if your partner arrives home, opens the garage, checks the mail, and enters the house, the system now sends one summary notification: "Someone arrived home and closed the garage door." The AI also enhances search within Home, letting you find specific clips like a package delivery. Noteworthy events appear at the top of the screen for quick review.

Organized Safari Tabs

Finally, Safari gets a tab organizer that uses on-device AI to understand your browsing context. If you have multiple tabs open related to a trip—hotels, flights, itineraries—the browser can automatically group them into a single tab group named "Travel." These groups appear at the top of the window for easy access. The AI works entirely on the device, so your browsing history remains private from Apple and third parties.

These features collectively represent Apple's vision for ambient AI: intelligence that anticipates needs and simplifies tasks without demanding attention. By embedding AI into familiar tools, iOS 27 makes the iPhone more helpful without asking users to change their habits.
