SpaceX is set to publish its first earnings report as a public company on August 4, and Wall Street’s attention will center on one enormous tension: the company’s multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence expansion versus the steady but comparatively smaller profits generated by Starlink. The report, covering the three months ended June 30, will be the first since SpaceX’s June initial public offering, and it will give investors a detailed look at how the company is balancing its dual identity as a satellite connectivity provider and an AI infrastructure builder.
First public earnings report
SpaceX will release second-quarter results after US markets close on August 4, followed by a webcast at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Analysts are projecting approximately $10.2 billion in AI capital spending for the quarter, a figure that dwarfs the $1.42 billion in operating profit expected from Starlink, the company’s satellite internet division. The juxtaposition does not mean Starlink’s cash directly funds SpaceX’s AI projects, but it illustrates the scale of the company’s computing investments relative to the earnings power of its strongest business.
The report marks a milestone for SpaceX, which spent years as a privately held company with limited financial disclosure. The IPO has brought new scrutiny to its books, and the upcoming earnings call will be the first chance for public investors to hear management discuss the company’s strategy in detail. The combination with xAI, completed earlier this year, has made SpaceX one of the largest corporate spenders on artificial intelligence infrastructure, with investments in data centers, chips, and networking that rival the budgets of major cloud providers.
Starlink remains the financial anchor
Starlink continues to be SpaceX’s most reliable source of revenue and profit. Estimates compiled by Reuters project $1.42 billion in second-quarter operating profit from the connectivity segment, up from $1.19 billion in the first quarter. That growth reflects a steady expansion in Starlink’s subscriber base, which now includes consumers, enterprises, maritime operators, airlines, and government agencies. Starlink has also benefited from recent price adjustments and increased demand for high-speed internet in underserved regions.
Operating profit, however, is not the same as cash available for AI projects. Starlink must fund an ongoing cycle of satellite manufacturing, launches, customer terminal production, ground infrastructure, and network upgrades. SpaceX has been deploying newer satellites with higher capacity and is preparing for future generations that will incorporate laser links and direct-to-smartphone capabilities. These investments consume a significant share of Starlink’s operating cash flow, even as the segment remains profitable on an operating basis.
Starlink’s financial performance is critical to SpaceX’s overall credit profile. The connectivity business provides a stable revenue base that supports borrowing and reduces the company’s reliance on equity markets. But the sheer size of SpaceX’s AI ambitions means that Starlink’s profits, while growing, are unlikely to cover the capital demands of the AI division. This shift has attracted a different type of investor, one that is willing to accept near-term losses in exchange for potential long-term dominance in artificial intelligence. It has also drawn comparisons to other companies that have made large AI bets, such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, although few have moved as aggressively relative to their existing business size.
SpaceX management has argued that the combination creates synergies between its satellite network and xAI’s computing platforms. Starlink can provide high-bandwidth connectivity for remote data centers, while xAI’s models and infrastructure can be used to optimize satellite operations, launch scheduling, and autonomous systems. The company also plans to integrate AI into its Starship development and other engineering programs, potentially reducing costs and accelerating timelines.
Rising capital expenditures and new data center plans
The financial scale of SpaceX’s AI push is visible in its capital expenditure numbers. AI capital expenditures reached $7.72 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up from $2.57 billion a year earlier. SpaceX attributed the increase primarily to data-center construction and expansion. The company’s reported plans for a large Texas AI data center could push those infrastructure requirements even higher in the coming quarters.
Data centers of the scale SpaceX is building require significant lead times and massive upfront investment. The company must order advanced graphics processing units, secure power supply agreements, construct cooling systems, and deploy networking hardware. Much of this spending is committed before any revenue is generated, which explains why the AI segment has produced such large operating losses. The company’s approach is to build first and monetize later, a strategy that has worked for other tech giants but carries substantial execution risk.
SpaceX has also been acquiring land and power capacity in parts of Texas where electricity is relatively abundant and regulatory hurdles are manageable. The Texas data center project is expected to house hundreds of thousands of GPUs, making it one of the largest AI supercomputing facilities in the world. If completed as planned, it would give SpaceX a significant competitive advantage in training and running large language models, but it also exposes the company to construction delays, supply chain disruptions, and cost overruns.
External compute deals provide an early test
SpaceX plans to use its AI infrastructure for xAI’s own products and services while selling selected capacity to other companies. That strategy could generate revenue before xAI’s own models become profitable, but it carries substantial costs and risks. The company has already signed several notable agreements that will be put to the test in the coming quarters.
In May, SpaceX signed cloud agreements with Anthropic covering access to approximately 325,000 Nvidia graphics processing units across its Colossus data centers. Under the agreements, Anthropic will pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, with reduced fees during the initial capacity ramp. After the first three months, either party may terminate the agreements with 90 days’ notice. The termination clause gives Anthropic flexibility if the capacity proves unreliable or too expensive, while SpaceX must ensure that it can deliver the promised computing power without jeopardizing its other obligations.
A separate agreement with Reflection AI reportedly runs through May 2029, adding another source of recurring revenue. SpaceX has also held discussions about a possible Pentagon compute contract, though no deal had been finalized as of the latest public reports. A government contract would be significant not only because of its size but because it would provide a degree of revenue certainty that commercial agreements do not always offer.
Those arrangements could create substantial recurring revenue, but their profitability remains unclear. SpaceX has not provided detailed figures for power costs, infrastructure utilization, operating margins, or customer concentration. The company’s ability to manage these contracts profitably will depend on how efficiently it operates its data centers and whether it can keep utilization rates high.
Debt and financing obligations
Financing adds another claim on SpaceX’s cash flow. The company borrowed $20 billion in March to refinance several X and xAI obligations. It subsequently issued $25 billion in senior notes, using the proceeds to repay the bridge facility and cover related costs. This debt arrangement gives SpaceX additional breathing room but also increases its interest expense and repayment obligations, which will appear in the upcoming earnings report.
The company’s total debt load is now substantial, and some analysts have expressed concern about the sustainability of its capital-intensive strategy. SpaceX must continue to fund Starlink’s expansion, develop Starship, operate its launch business, and build out AI infrastructure, all while servicing billions of dollars in debt. The company’s cash flow from operations, driven largely by Starlink and launch services, provides a foundation, but it may not be enough to cover all of these commitments in the near term.
The issuance of senior notes in the spring helped SpaceX avoid a liquidity crunch, but it also signaled to the market that the company is willing to use significant leverage to finance its ambitions.
