L'acteur sud-coréen Kim Soo Hyun dans la controverse après le suicide de l'actrice Kim Sae Ron

The South Korean entertainment industry is reeling from a devastating scandal following the suicide of actress Kim Sae Ron in February 2024. On March 10, the YouTube channel HoverLab released explosive allegations that top actor Kim Soo Hyun had been in a six-year romantic relationship with Kim Sae Ron, which reportedly began when she was just 15 years old and he was 27. The allegations quickly ignited a firestorm of controversy, casting a shadow over one of the country's most beloved and highest-paid actors.

Kim Soo Hyun, 37, rose to fame through hit dramas such as Dream High (2011), Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), and the international sensation Queen of Tears (2024). He was widely regarded as a clean-cut, bankable star with a loyal fanbase. However, the HoverLab report painted a very different picture, claiming not only a relationship with a minor but also that Kim Soo Hyun's agency, GOLDMEDALIST—which he helped create—pressured Kim Sae Ron to repay a debt of 700 million won (approximately 443,000 euros) incurred after a drunk driving accident in 2022. The debt, according to the channel, became a source of intense stress for the actress, who was already struggling to revive her career.

Kim Sae Ron began her acting career as a child, making her film debut in 2009 with A Brand New Life, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She gained critical acclaim for roles in The Man From Nowhere and A Girl at My Door. Her career trajectory was promising, but it was derailed by the 2022 incident in which she crashed her car into a guardrail and a transformer in Seoul while under the influence of alcohol. The accident ended her contract with GOLDMEDALIST and effectively halted her acting opportunities. Despite attempts to make a comeback, she remained unable to secure any roles.

The allegations, disseminated by HoverLab—a far-right YouTube channel that has previously been fined for spreading fake news—included photos and a letter from Kim Soo Hyun to Kim Sae Ron written during his military service in 2018. The channel claimed this evidence proved the relationship predated 2019, when Sae Ron would have been 17. However, the agency initially denied all claims, labeling them as "malicious" and "completely false." In a statement, GOLDMEDALIST argued that the relationship only began in the summer of 2019, when Sae Ron was already a legal adult in South Korea (age 19 by Korean reckoning), and that it ended in the fall of 2020. They further stated that the letter was merely a friendly note, similar to those sent to other acquaintances.

The controversy deepened when Dispatch, a respected Korean media outlet, published a message that Kim Sae Ron allegedly sent to Kim Soo Hyun in March 2024, begging for help. In it, she wrote: "Oppa, it's Sae Ron. I received the certification letter today informing me that [your company] is suing me. You said you would give me a lot of time, so I'm working hard and preparing for my return." She pleaded for him to intervene: "But if you suddenly ask for 700 million won right away, I really can't do anything. It's not that I don't want to, but I can't. Do you really have to go as far as filing a lawsuit? Save me, please. Give me some time." The message went unanswered, according to sources.

Kim Sae Ron was found dead in her Seoul home on February 16, 2024—coincidentally, the same day as Kim Soo Hyun's birthday. Her death sent shockwaves through the industry, and the subsequent revelations have led to a widespread backlash against both the actor and his agency. Netizens have called for boycotts of his projects, and social media is flooded with demands for accountability. The controversy raises uncomfortable questions about the power dynamics in the Korean entertainment world, where agencies often hold immense control over their artists' careers and finances.

GOLDMEDALIST has insisted that the debt issue was resolved amicably and that they never demanded repayment. In a statement released on March 14, the agency claimed they had written off the debt as a bad expense and had not pursued legal action. They also expressed concern for Kim Soo Hyun's mental state, describing him as being in "extreme confusion" and showing "signs of severe psychological instability." However, these statements have done little to quell the public outrage. Many believe that the agency's handling of the situation—and the actor's silence—contributed to Kim Sae Ron's despair.

The fallout has been swift for Kim Soo Hyun's career. Prada, which had appointed him as a brand ambassador in December 2023, announced on Friday, March 14, that it had terminated its contract with him "by mutual agreement," as reported by WWD. Other brands are expected to follow suit. The actor, who was previously one of the most sought-after endorsers in Korea, now faces an uncertain future. The K-drama industry, which relies heavily on star power and clean images, may be forced to reckon with its handling of scandals and its treatment of younger talents.

The case of Kim Sae Ron is not isolated. Several other Korean actresses have spoken out about the intense pressure they faced from agencies and the public. The culture of debt repayment within the industry is particularly controversial. Many talent agencies act as moneylenders, covering expenses for their clients but then demanding repayment under strict terms. When a star falls from grace, as Kim Sae Ron did after her DUI, the financial burden can become overwhelming. This system has drawn criticism for exploiting vulnerable young artists.

Kim Soo Hyun's rise to fame was meteoric. Born in 1988, he began his career in 2007 with a role in the sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile. His breakthrough came in 2011 with Dream High, a drama about aspiring K-pop stars. He then starred in the historical romance Moon Embracing the Sun, which achieved peak ratings of over 42%. Following his mandatory military service from 2017 to 2019, he returned to the screen with the acclaimed drama It's Okay to Not Be Okay in 2020, which dealt with mental health themes. His latest hit, Queen of Tears, was a Netflix sensation that cemented his international fame. However, this controversy threatens to undo all of that success.

The response from the public has been mixed but largely critical. While some fans continue to defend Kim Soo Hyun, arguing that the relationship was legal and consensual, others point to the disparity in power and age as a form of exploitation. The fact that Kim Sae Ron was a minor when the relationship allegedly started—and that she was under his agency's management—adds a layer of ethical concern. The Korean entertainment industry has long faced criticism for its handling of child actors and the lack of protections for young stars.

As the story continues to unfold, the focus remains on Kim Soo Hyun's next move. He has not made a public statement himself, relying on his agency to handle the crisis. GOLDMEDALIST has promised to present "a clear and substantiated position" but has yet to provide concrete evidence to counter the allegations. Meanwhile, the memory of Kim Sae Ron looms large. Her death has become a rallying point for discussions about mental health, industry pressure, and the need for systemic change. For now, the career of one of South Korea's brightest stars hangs in the balance, and the entire K-drama world is watching.
